Baltimore businesses navigate through short-term hurdles post bridge fallout

The Baltimore business community is facing significant challenges following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The bridge collapse has led to the closure of the port of Baltimore to vessel traffic, causing disruptions to businesses in the Dundalk neighborhood and beyond.

One business owner feeling the strain is Alex Del Sordo, owner of the Hard Yacht Cafe, who is concerned about stabilizing costs for employment and keeping his restaurant open during this difficult time. Del Sordo is not alone in his concerns, as businesses across Baltimore are experiencing lost shipments and decreased revenues as a result of the port closure.

Fortunately, the Army Corps of Engineers has announced plans to open limited access channels for ships by the end of the month, offering some relief to struggling businesses. Additionally, the U.S. Small Business Administration and Maryland Governor Wes Moore are providing relief funding to affected businesses to help them weather the storm.

The commercial real estate sector in Baltimore is optimistic that the impact of the bridge collapse will be short-term, as businesses are already working to reroute cargo and minimize losses. Even President Joe Biden visited Baltimore to show support for recovery efforts and offer assistance to those affected by the port closure.
