California tech workers and VC billions being drawn to Denver and Boulder
Last Updated on April 11, 2024 by Robert C. Hoopes
The Denver-Boulder metro region in Colorado is quickly becoming a hub for business growth and investment, particularly in the tech sector. Amidst the pandemic, many companies are choosing to move their operations to Denver, including AgentSync, an insurance compliance software startup that relocated from San Francisco and has since experienced significant growth.
Colorado is attracting major tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Salesforce, who are setting up major operations in the area. Additionally, the region is seeing investments in new technologies such as quantum computing, further solidifying its position as a tech hotspot.
With over 24,000 tech businesses in the state, Denver is home to about 73% of these, indicating the concentration of tech companies in the metro area. Venture capitalist Dan Caruso has taken notice of this growth and recently started a VC firm focused on tech in the region.
However, despite the growth in the tech industry, there is still a lack of diversity in the business community, particularly for Black-owned businesses. Non-profit organization Access Mode is working to address this issue by providing funding, educational resources, and access to VC networking events for minority-owned tech startups.
One example of a Black business owner being supported by Access Mode is Donavan Bennett, co-founder of startup Mili Llama. As the tech industry in Denver continues to expand, efforts to promote diversity and inclusion will be crucial for the long-term success and sustainability of the region’s business community.
