A student group at Brown University has sparked controversy with its recent encampment on campus, prompting concerns of a potential crackdown by university administrators. The Brown Divest Coalition, the student group behind the encampment, has accused the university of using repressive tactics to suppress their peaceful protest.

One of the tactics cited by the Brown Divest Coalition is random ID sweeps and threats of disciplinary action against students participating in the encampment. According to the group, students have been informed that they will face conduct proceedings for violating university policies.

In response, Brown University has defended its actions, stating that while it supports peaceful protest and activism on campus, it cannot condone behavior that violates policies intended to ensure the safety and security of the Brown community. The university has pointed to past instances, such as a hunger strike, where protest was allowed within the boundaries of their policies.

University administrators, along with the Department of Public Safety, have vowed to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to maintain order. They have emphasized that any reports of violence, harassment, and intimidation will not be tolerated on campus.

Despite the tensions, Brown University has not witnessed any violent behavior at the encampment, unlike other campuses where protests have turned ugly. The information was shared with ABC News by Nadine El-Bawab, shedding light on the ongoing student activism and university response at Brown University.
