The 2024 Drake Relays Showcase Iowa’s Top High School Track and Field Talent
The highly anticipated 2024 Drake Relays kicked off on Friday in Des Moines as Iowa’s top high school track and field athletes gathered to compete. The day started bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with the girls discus event and was scheduled to continue until just before 9 p.m.
However, the day was not without its challenges as weather delays interrupted the action multiple times throughout the day. Despite some high school events being postponed, college and pro competitions were still determined to finish that night.
Amidst the delays, standout performances could still be witnessed. Minnesota State impressed with a sweep of both the men’s and women’s sprint medley races, while North Dakota State’s Nell Graham and Dordt’s Payton Mauldin claimed victory in the women’s and men’s 400m races, respectively.
Pleasant Valley’s Ani Wedemeyer and Missouri’s Kelsey Schweizer showcased their talent in the girls 800m and women’s college 800m events, respectively. Additionally, Ankeny’s Logan Fairchild and MOC-FV’s Tierney Huss emerged as winners in the high school sprint events.
The day also saw impressive feats in field events, with athletes like Camanche’s Tyson Seeser and Northern Iowa’s Spencer Kessel taking home victories in the high jump and shot put, respectively. The Waukee Northwest girls triumphed in the 4×200 event, while Pella’s Hanson King claimed victory in the boys shot put.
Despite the weather challenges, the athletes displayed remarkable talent and resilience on the prestigious Blue Oval, leaving spectators in awe of their incredible skills and determination.
