Columbia University Shifts to Remote Learning Amid Pro-Palestinian Protests

Columbia University made the decision to switch to remote learning on Monday as tensions escalated on campus due to ongoing pro-Palestinian protests. President Minouche Shafik announced the move in an effort to deescalate the situation and consider next steps. This decision comes as a tent encampment reappeared on the school’s grounds, despite being previously removed by the NYPD which resulted in over 100 arrests.

Security measures have been increased at the campus with barricades and enhanced ID-checks at entrances. New York City and state leaders have expressed concerns over anti-Jewish rhetoric amid the protests. Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Rep. Elise Stefanik have called for the resignation of President Shafik over what they perceive to be a lack of protection for Jewish students.

Jewish students on campus have expressed fear and concern over antisemitic chants during the protests, leading some advocates to recommend staying home for safety. Protests calling for divestment from Israel continue at Columbia and The New School, with solidarity rallies being held at other colleges.

In response to the escalating tensions, the White House has denounced antisemitism and called for peaceful assembly. The administration is urging all parties to find peaceful ways to address their concerns and engage in dialogue rather than resorting to violence.
