A photo of a customer’s bill circulated on Reddit, igniting a heated discussion with over 2,000 comments and 9,000 reactions.

Owned by Jen and Emily Chan, the restaurant defended its decision on Facebook, clarifying that the health insurance fee is optional and can be declined by customers. This charge has been listed on the menu for about a year, inspired by similar initiatives taken by other restaurants.

According to the Chans, the rising health insurance premiums and other operational costs have posed significant challenges for the business. In an attempt to raise awareness about the struggles faced by small businesses, they opted to separately add the charge on customers’ bills.

In response to the controversy, the restaurant refunded the disgruntled customer’s bill, which included a $2.02 health insurance fee, hoping to appease them and encourage the removal of the viral social media post.

Recognizing the financial hardships faced by small businesses in the restaurant industry, the National Restaurant Association has expressed support for transparent approaches, such as the one adopted by JenChan’s. With notoriously low profit margins, additional fees might be necessary for businesses to remain operational.
