Dr. Thomas J. Grites, a distinguished alumnus of Illinois State University, has had a remarkable career in education that has spanned over four decades.
After a unique experience working as a brakeman on the railroad, Grites decided to return to college to pursue a degree in mathematics education. This decision led him to eventually become an assistant provost at Stockton University, where he impacted the lives of thousands of students during his 43-year tenure.
Even after retiring in 2020, Grites continues to stay involved in academia by serving as a part-time advisor and adjunct professor. He also remains active in professional publications and conference presentations, sharing his wealth of knowledge with colleagues and future higher education administrators.
Grites’ dedication to helping transfer students led him to develop a transfer seminar at Stockton University, which he considers one of the highlights of his career. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he has received prestigious awards from organizations such as NACADA, the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, and the American College Personnel Association.
In 2024, Grites was honored with Illinois State University’s Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of education. Despite his numerous accolades, Grites remains humble about his achievements and views the recognition of the award as particularly rewarding.
