Former Dean of Columbia University Law School and co-chair of the university’s task force combatting antisemitism, David M. Schizer, recently spoke at a hearing in Washington, DC to shed light on the issue of antisemitism and share his personal experiences.

During his speech, Schizer recounted a troubling story involving a student wearing an Israeli flag shirt who was physically assaulted by a protester and told to keep running after breaking free. This incident highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by individuals of Jewish faith or those who support Israel.

Schizer also shared a deeply personal account of his grandfather’s experience with antisemitism in Ukraine, where he was nearly lynched during a pogrom. These stories underscored the lasting impact of hatred and discrimination based on religious beliefs.

In his address, Schizer underscored the importance of combating antisemitism and highlighted the progress being made by the university’s task force in addressing this pressing issue. The task force has recommended four rules governing protests and plans to issue additional reports based on student encounters with antisemitism and proposed solutions for change.

Furthermore, Schizer emphasized the need for acceptance of Zionist individuals in various student groups and activities, without facing discrimination based on their beliefs. By fostering a culture of inclusion and understanding, universities can create a more welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their religious or political beliefs.
