LinkedIn co-founder Allen Blue has issued a warning about a looming “significant sustainable skills shortage” that is impeding progress in the green transition. In a report by LinkedIn, it was revealed that the number of individuals possessing the essential green skills necessary for green jobs is severely lacking. Blue emphasized that while the number of green jobs is increasing, the workforce with the required expertise to fill these roles is not keeping pace.

The report showcased that only about one in eight to nine people in Europe possess the necessary green skills. Even more concerning is the fact that this number has grown at a meager rate of just nine percent annually. Governments, on the other hand, have a pivotal role in addressing the green skills shortage. They can directly provide training programs or mandate that companies and investors allocate resources towards skill development initiatives. By implementing such measures, governments can help ensure that the workforce is adequately equipped to meet the demands of the expanding green sector.

Furthermore, LinkedIn’s report uncovered a concerning underrepresentation of women in both green skills and green jobs. Blue emphasized the importance of creating equitable training programs that address this gender disparity. Governments should prioritize implementing initiatives that provide equal opportunities for women to gain the necessary skills and access green jobs.
