Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to money laundering charges. Prosecutors are seeking a three-year prison term for Zhao, citing violations of US anti-money laundering laws.

This news comes on the heels of a former cryptocurrency mogul, Sam Bankman-Fried, receiving a 25-year sentence for fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors are pushing for a 36-month sentence for Zhao to reflect the seriousness of his offenses.

Zhao, who has admitted to breaches of the Bank Secrecy Act, has agreed to step down as CEO of Binance and pay $4.3 billion in penalties. Despite this hefty fine, his fortune remains intact at $41.6 billion, making him the 29th richest person in the world.

In a letter to the judge, Zhao apologized for his actions and accepted full responsibility. The Canadian citizen, with a background in computer science, founded Binance in 2017. The company’s new CEO, Richard Teng, is working to address its opaque structure and is considering different jurisdictions for its global headquarters.

Binance’s market share has declined amid legal challenges from regulators. The SEC case against Binance and Zhao is still pending, with 13 charges filed in June 2023. Investors have started to lose trust in Binance as a safe haven for their assets due to these legal issues.
