The University of Southern California (USC) has stirred controversy after canceling commencement speeches by Jon M Chu and other honorees, citing security concerns amid the cancellation of a speech by pro-Palestinian valedictorian Asna Tabassum.

The decision, which was announced on the university’s website, was made in response to fears of disruption related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and external influences on the campus situation. Notable figures affected by the cancellation include Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M Chu, tennis legend Billie Jean King, and National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson.

Asna Tabassum, the pro-Palestinian valedictorian, expressed disappointment and a sense of abandonment by USC in a statement released through the Council on American-Islamic Relations. USC defended its decision, stating that it was not a freedom of speech issue but a measure taken to prioritize campus security and safety.

The move has sparked backlash from advocacy groups such as CAIR Greater Los Angeles, who accused USC of amplifying voices of hate and failing to protect its student body. Despite the criticism, USC has assured that further updates on the commencement ceremony will be provided next week.

The cancellation of the commencement speeches has highlighted the delicate balance between freedom of speech and maintaining a safe and secure environment on university campuses. Stay tuned for more developments on this ongoing situation on ‘My MBA Career’.
