Three student leaders at Harvard University have recently resigned from the Harvard Institute of Politics’ Student Advisory Committee (SAC), sparking a debate surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on college campuses. The resignations came after the SAC decided not to issue a public condemnation of the recent terrorist attacks on Israel.
Expressing their shame and citing a lack of conscience, the student leaders stated that they could no longer serve on a collective body that chooses silence in the face of such atrocities. Out of the student body, only 17.9 percent voted in favor of adopting any kind of statement regarding the attacks.
In response to the controversy, the executive team of the IOP released a statement condemning all acts of terror and violence against civilians in both Israel and Palestine. However, the SAC members were divided on whether to include the word “terrorism” in the statement and mention the Islamist militant group, Hamas.
The situation escalated further when some SAC members who initially supported the statement withdrew their support after facing threats and doxxing. This raised concerns about the safety and well-being of those involved in the debate.
Despite their resignations from the governing board, the student leaders have announced that they will continue in their roles as program chairs to promote dialogue and discussion. They have called for Harvard affiliates to come together and mend divides during these difficult times.
In response to the resignations, the IOP’s executive team has expressed their intention to meet with the departing student leaders in order to foster a safe and welcoming environment. This highlights their commitment to creating an inclusive space for all students.
